Botanically known as Sclerocarya birrea, Marula tree is native to southern parts of African grasslands such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and Swaziland. It is a member of the same botanical family Anacardiaceae as Cashew, Mango, and Pistachio trees. The fruit of this tree has yellowish skin with white flesh. They are drupes with a single seed covered in thick husk. The tree earned different nicknames with the passage of time. There are two reasons why the tree was utilized in purifying ceremonies before marriages occurred; first, one of the nicknames proved its holiness i.e. ‘The Marriage Tree’. Second, the tree is a symbol for ‘fertility’ and ‘purity’. The usage of Marula tree dates to nearly 10,000 years in African civilization. Due to its historical and cultural values, it is protected by the law. Every part, from its roots to its fruits, is beneficial for us in different ways.
