Thymus Vulgaris, commonly known as Thyme (English thyme, summer thyme, winter thyme, French thyme, or garden thyme), is a perennial herb in the mint family Lamiaceae. It has a sweet, earthy flavor which makes it a refreshing and soothing plant. The Latin name Vulgaris means ‘common’ in the sense of ‘widespread’.

This herb is native to southern Europe from the western Mediterranean to southern Italy. It was used only as a culinary herb before but now, people are aware of its medicinal uses as well. The thyme plant is a bushy, evergreen woody-based subshrub with small, aromatic, grey-green leaves and combination of purple and pink flowers that come out in the beginning of summers.

The height of the plant is usually between 6 to 12 inches while the width is 16 inches. The most suitable place for its cultivation is a hot, sunny location with well-drained soil. It grows constantly after the spring, that is the reason why it is usually planted in the spring. It is found that thyme can also endure deep freezes as it grows wild on mountain highlands.

There are almost 300 varieties of thyme because it grows in many environments and climates. Although the similarity in all the varieties deceives us into thinking that they are same, but they all have different chemical compositions along with the health benefits they offer.

Besides its culinary use, Thyme is also used to boost immune system, to heal wounds and scars, to support heart health, to boost energy, to sooth away tension, to increase concentration, and to eliminate bad breath and body odor, etc.

Earlier, Egyptians utilized thyme to preserve human or animal remains. Because of its sweet aroma, Romans utilized it to refine their room and give an aromatic flavor to cheese and liqueurs. To have a better sleep and prevent nightmares, the herb was placed underneath the pillows in the European Middle Ages.

The ancient Greeks used thyme in their showers and also used it as an incense in their sanctuaries, believing that it was a source of fearlessness. Thyme leaves were also presented as gifts to the knights by many women so that it gives them courage.

The basic ingredient of Thyme i.e. thymol, is beneficial in many ways. It is being used in mouthwashes and Vaporubs since ages. It is better to use natural products for any kind of problem rather than using medicines that contain different type of chemicals.

In addition to these benefits, thyme was also included in recipes containing meat as a measure of preservation, to protect the meat from rotting faster because there was no concept of refrigeration back then.

Thyme is sold both fresh and dried. The fresh form is more flavorful. However, it is often difficult to keep it fresh as the storage life is rarely more than a week. Dried Thyme is a better option as it holds its flavor superior to many other herbs.
