Botanically known as Sclerocarya birrea, Marula tree is native to southern parts of African grasslands such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and Swaziland. It is a member of the same botanical family Anacardiaceae as Cashew, Mango, and Pistachio trees. The fruit of this tree has yellowish skin with white flesh. They are drupes with a single seed covered in thick husk. The tree earned different nicknames with the passage of time. There are two reasons why the tree was utilized in purifying ceremonies before marriages occurred; first, one of the nicknames proved its holiness i.e. ‘The Marriage Tree’. Botanically known as Argania Spinosa, it is a genus of flowering plants. The trees grow to a height of 8 to 10 m and live up to approximately 200 years. They have a wide spreading crown and are thorny. The leaves of Argan tree are small with the length ranging from 2 to 4 m and the shape of these leaves being oval. It also has small flowers with five pale yellow-green petals. The flowering takes place in the month of April.
